Who?
We are a voluntary organisation founded for the purpose of organising annual
exchanges with a similar group in Bochum (Sheffield's twin city in Germany) for adults learning our
respective languages. The exchange was established in about 1974 and is open to all mature students of German
in Sheffield.Bochum has much in common with Sheffield, having grown in prominence through the
development of its coal and steel industries followed by regeneration through diversification.
It is also a 'green' city with attractive parks, adjacent to pleasant countryside. Back to top
Why?
The purpose is to enable the participants to gain practical language experience abroad, to promote
understanding and appreciation of each others culture, way of life and cities, to contribute towards lasting
peace between Germany and England, to make new friendships. Back to top
When?
The exchanges take place every year, usually for one week in May/June. One year a party from
Sheffield will be warmly received in Bochum and the following year a similar from Bochum will
be equally warmly entertained in Sheffield. In accordance with the established pattern, in odd years
the exchange takes place in Sheffield, in even years in Bochum. Back to top
How and What?
The participants stay with families in the host city, as far as possible of similar ages and with
like interests. The programme for the week traditionally includes an official reception by the Lord Mayor
or Oberburgermeister, visits to factories, museums and other places of interest. Group social events and some free
time for getting to know one's host family and sharing in their social life and exploring their city.
Visits invariably end with a rousing farewell party on the last evening. Back to top
How can I become involved?
Each year we have been pleased to welcome new members on the visits to Bochum and as hosts to the Bochumers
visiting Sheffield. The understanding is that anyone wishing to join a visit to Bochum should be prepared
to be host to a guest from Bochum the following year. Back to top
